For the keenly contested African Bank of the Year category, Nigeria’s Guarantee Trust Bank will slug it out with Standard Chartered, South Africa, Equity Bank, Kenya and Attijariwafa Bank, Morocco.

The African Bankers’ Award is organised by African Banker magazine in collaboration with BusinessinAfrica Events. It is a landmark event that brings together more than 500 key industry players and top government officials from Africa and around the world to celebrate excellence and best practices in African banking and finance.

A distinguished and independent panel of judges, known and respected for their expertise on the African banking and finance industry, will decide the final winners of shortlisted categories. This year’s edition of the award will also see the introduction of new categories such as Deal of the Year, Financial Inclusion and Socially Responsible Bank categories.

Speaking on the quality of entries for this year’s award, Omar Ben Yedder, publisher of African Banker magazine, said the improvements in the entries shows that banking is rapidly developing in Africa. He added that the African Banker seeks to create a benchmark and promote best practices through the awards.

“I remain a staunch defender of the positive role banking institutions can play. The two biggest listed companies in China are both financial institutions and they play a critical role in the economy. The same can be said about many banks in Africa. The entries seem to get better year after year. The variety of entries and the quality of these entries, especially in the Deal of the Year category, illustrate the increased sophistication and the growing investment in banking activity across Africa, and that can only be encouraging.”

The winners in various categories of the awards will be announced at a ceremony billed to hold May 29, during the annual African Development Bank, AfDB, meetings in Marrakech, Morocco.  The African Development Bank which is the largest development institution in Africa, is the official patron of the award. The annual ceremony is also supported by Mastercard, which are expanding their operations extensively in the continent.
