Campaigns: Coalition warns youths to avoid being used as thugs
General News
YOUTH organisations in Enugu State, under the aegis of Coalition of Enugu Youths, have warned youths to resist any attempt of being used by politicians as thugs during the 2023 general election campaigns.
The warning is contained in statement issued on Thursday and signed by the three youth leaders in the three senatorial zones in the state.
The youth leaders are: Roy Ekwueme, President, Nsukka Youths General Assembly; Edeani Edeani, President, Nkanu Youths Assembly, and Nebo Ebube, President, Enugu West Youth Forum.
The youth leaders said the warning became necessary as the campaigns for the 2023 general elections kicked off on Sept. 28.
They urged youths to resist any attempt to use them by political parties or their candidates to cause violence and chaos in the state before, during, and after the elections.
“As youths we must resist every attempt by political parties or their candidates to use us as political thugs to achieve their selfish interests.
“We must understand that at every point in time, the interests of politicians are what matters to them first, that is why after using you to win election, they dumped you.
“If you make yourself a thug or attack dog for politicians, your usefulness will expire once they get into office, because he/she will dump you.”
The statement said that youths, have the right to support whoever they wished, but not to hurt others or die untimely because they were hired as political thugs.
“Don’t hurt your fellow human being, don’t destroy the property of others, don’t kill no matter the amount of money promised you, as no politician’s ambition is worth the blood of another person or your own blood.
“Please let’s go through this campaign period in brotherhood, respect of choices, understanding, peace and fear of God.
“So that candidates that will emerge victorious will immediately start delivering democratic dividends to the people,” the statement stated.
The youth leaders also urged political parties, their candidates and supporters to engage in issue based campaigns in order to sustain peace, unity and good neighbourliness in the state.
“Candidates should ensure their campaigns must be issue based, on what affect our state, zones, local governments, communities and proffering solutions on how to solve them instead of attacking or blackmailing one another.
“Campaign must be followed in a way to strengthen the unity of our dear state, we urge all the governorship candidates to develop programmes that will empower the youths.
`One of the major problems facing youths in the country is unemployment that has resulted in youth restiveness,” the statement further stated.(NAN)
