THE Chairman, Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), Prof. Isah Mohammed, has called on Nigerian Armed Forces Personnel to conform to the principles of selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leading by example in their respective positions.

Mohammed made the call while speaking during  a two-day workshop on compliance of asset declaration and code of conducts for the Nigerian Armed Forces on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that when a public officer abides by the codes of conduct, the nation will save huge resources.

”The workshop  is one of the bureau’s step at educating and sensitising public officers and general public on the code of conduct expected of all public officers.

”When top public functionaries of government are aware and abide by the codes, the need for the application of punitive measures would be minimised.

“The need for the application of punitive measures would be minimized to the lowest ebb if not eliminated, thereby, reducing the resources expended on prosecution of cases,” he said.

Mohammed also added that declaration of assets was only one, out of the 14 codes of conduct the Bureau enforces.

“Conversely, assets declaration is most talked about and known function of the Bureau, compliance level from public officers is not encouraging.

“This, I believe is unconnected with the fear of the unknown.

“Be that as it may, it is more to the advantage of a public officer to declare his assets than to decline,” he said.

In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin urged the participants to be accountable and transparent in whatever position they found themselves.

“As I have always stressed that every officer who holds a position of responsibility must be accountable.

“You are also aware that accountability is one of the cornerstone in the fight against corruption which is one of Mr President’s agenda,” he said.

He also advised them to share the knowledge acquired from the workshop to their surbodinates and colleagues. (NAN)
