AT the Nigeria International Energy Summit 2026, NIES2026, Jim Swartz, Chairman/Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria, says that Chevron has a vision to fully tap Nigeria’s oil and gas potential.
Swartz, who stated this during a panel session on Capitalizing Africa’s Global Upstream Momentum, at the ongoing Nigerian International Energy Summit, highlighted Chevron’s strategy across swamp, shallow and deepwater assets, emphasizing that the company is continuing to explore and improve additional resources, with the belief that a lot of untapped potential remains in the country.
He pointed to infill drilling, infield exploration discoveries and development of existing gas reserves as key pathways to boost production.
“Part of our strategy is to take advantage of what we have now through faster increase in barrels, operational reliability and exploration,” Swartz said.
He cited new rigs for shallow water development, appraisal wells and development wells as part of Chevron’s operational plan.
Swartz also addressed the role of government incentives and the Petroleum Industry Act l, PIA, in driving deepwater projects, stressing the need for consistent frameworks that ensure long-term growth, investment security, and regulatory predictability.
On the gas infrastructure front, Chevron continues to focus on expanding and modernizing pipelines to improve domestic power generation, fertilizer production and West African gas exports. “Gas infrastructure is key and building it out is essential to moving gas to multiple markets efficiently,” he said.
He concluded by emphasizing that Chevron’s long-term investment approach and collaboration with the Nigerian government are designed to unlock the country’s full energy potential while ensuring production continuity and investor confidence.
