A commercial tricyclist, Lekan Taiwo, 24, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing phones from members of the public.

Taiwo, who resides at No. 29, Powerline St., Iju-Ishaga, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and stealing to which he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Shola Samuel, told the court that the defendant and some persons still at large committed the offences on Oct. 3 at Agidingbi, Oregun, Alausa, Ikeja.

He said that the defendant was arrested by police based on information received from members of the public that he belonged to a gang of thieves who attacked and snatched cell phones from people.

The offences contravened Sections 287 and 339 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 of the law prescribed three years jail term for stealing.

The Magistrate, Mrs I. A. Abina, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N10,000 with one surety in like sum.

Abina said that the surety should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the state government.

She adjourned the case until Nov.19 for mention. (NAN)
