CONTROVERSY has trailed Pastor David Ibiyeomie, senior pastor, Salvation Ministries’ threat to arrest Daddy Freeze, on-air-personality, OAP, for insulting Bishop David Oyedepo, general overseer, Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known as Winners’ Chapel. He said the next time Freeze tries to insult his ‘father’ (Oyedepo), he will get him arrested.

In a viral video online, Ibiyeomie said: “Insult me I won’t talk. But insulting Oyedepo! That bastard. Tell him any day I hear him talk about Oyedepo, do they know his father? Does Daddy Freeze have a father? Who is his father, that half-caste who is born by a Somalian?

“The day I hear him insult Oyedepo again, I’ll deal with him. Oyedepo may not talk, but I can’t be alive and you insult my father. Who gave birth to him? If he has a father, let him show us his father’s picture. Somebody they gave birth to in a ship. Does he look like a Nigerian? That’s a Somalian.

“I curse the day he was born. Insult my father when I’m alive? I can’t take it. I’ll tear you to pieces, you bastard. I’ll kill you, I’ll arrest you. People who have fathers don’t insult fathers. He’s insulting because he has no father. You can never insult a father if you have a father. Tell him, this is the last day he talks about Oyedepo. Let him show us his father’s picture if he has a father. A man who cannot marry. He has no wife.

“He can’t manage his home, he’s coming to talk on television. Is it not his wife who left him?” A broadcaster, does he have a good job? You are insulting my father and people are laughing,” he said.

Realnews recalled that Daddy Freeze criticized Oyedepo over his recent comment about marriage. Oyedepo had said that the only way to a fruitful marriage is submission on the part of the wife.

But Daddy Freeze countered that submission should not be only on the part of woman but the husband should submit to her too.

Realnews reports that both Oyedepo and Freeze based their statements on the biblical passage on Ephesians 5, verses 21 to 30, which stated: Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.  Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.  After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church—  for we are members of his body. ”

However, Nigerians are divided over Ibiyeomie’s threat. Some twitter users said the pastor’s comments do not reflect the body of Christ, while others are of the opinion that Ibiyeomie has every right to defend his ‘father’ Oyedepo.

Some of the twitter users like Reno Omokri, a former spokesperson to President Goodluck Jonathan disagreed with the pastor over his comments.  Omokri said Christ was insulted, but He did not retaliate. According to him, when they hurled insults at him, he did not retaliate, citing 1 Peter 2:23.

“Daddy Freeze was wrong on Oyedepo. But I know his mother and father. By calling him bastard, you not only insult him. You insult his mother. Daddy Freeze is cantankerous. He is sometimes (but not always) a credit to Christianity, but too often, he spoils his calling by engaging in needless controversy for the sake of notoriety and social media following. Face him and challenge him on that. But it‘s not right to insult him,” he said.

Another twitter user, Kingsley Unah said: “There is no Christ in Pastor Ibiyeomie’s comments against Freeze. “I don’t recognise Jesus Christ in these comments made by Pastor Ibiyeomie. Isn’t he supposed to be an embodiment of the gospel of Jesus Christ he claims to preach? Clearly, he has replaced Christ with his ‘father’, Oyedepo.”

In a swift defense of Ibiyeomie, Chukwu Jerry, a twitter user, praised the pastor for defending Oyedepo. He said: “He’s a true son of his father. I commend him for that. Those of you criticizing pastor are just telling us indirectly that they are bastards. Even a bastard will tear you into pieces if you insult anyone, who takes care of his responsibilities.”

On his part, Emmanuel Tobi, said he would join Pastor Ibiyeomie in fighting anyone who will insult Bishop Oyedepo. “I stand with you sir. I will destroy their family also. May their days be short and fill with pains if they should plan against my father, Bishop David Oyedepo,” he said.
