ASSISTANT Inspector General of Police in-charge of the new Zone 13, Ukpo in Anambra, AIG Danmallam Mohammed on Wednesday, donated foodstuffs to Faith Community Children’s Home in Awka, the Anambra capital.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the food items included tubers of yam, cartons of noodles, and bags of rice, among others worth thousands of Naira.

While presenting the items, Mohammed said besides cushioning the effect of COVID-19 pandemic, the gesture was further aimed at strengthening the police-community relations in the zone under his watch.

“Anytime anybody says that ‘police is your friend’, the reaction that usually follows this tilts towards the negative.

“I am not unaware of the fact that some unscrupulous elements in the police force are trying so hard to paint us black through their actions, in-actions, and reactions.

“Nevertheless, we will continue without an iota of fear, favour or sentiments to remain your friend and to care for you while maintaining peace, law, and order,” Mohammed said.

According to him, the police do not just maintain law and order,  they also care for the populace, the indigent, the downtrodden, the forsaken, and the impoverished.

The AIG  urged the Anglican Communion under which the orphanage was established to pray and support the police so as to enable them to carry out their duties diligently.

Receiving the items, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, Archbishop of the Province of Niger, Anglican Communion, commended the AIG for the gesture as well as efforts of police in securing the state.

“We are humbled by your visit. From what we are seeing, it is God that brought you to Anambra, Enugu, and Ebonyi.

“The Church and community are solidly behind you. We want to continue to assure you of our collaboration and prayers to enable you and your officers to succeed,” Ibezim said.

The archbishop further extolled the community policing initiative, which he noted, had led to the state being regarded as one of the most peaceful states in the country.

He, however, appealed for an outpost within the newly created zonal office to enable the church to organise prayers for personnel at intervals. (NAN)
