Coronavirus Pandemic

THE Integrity Elite (TIE), an advocacy and rights group, on Tuesday, distributed thousands of face masks and hand sanitisers in major markets and motor parks in Akure, the Ondo capital.

The Coordinator of TIE, Mr Lanre Ogidan, told newsmen after the distribution in Akure, that the move was part of the group’s advocacy and awareness campaign against the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

Ogidan added that since the ease on the lockdown by both states and Federal Government, there was need for increased awareness on hygiene, especially in markets, motor parts and worship centres. He said it would help to curb the spread of coronavirus through community infection.

Ogidan said the most dangerous way by which the deadly virus was spreading among the people was through community infection from places such as markets, motor parks, churches, mosques, clubs, and such places where large crowds were gathered.

He urged other non-governmental organisations to come out and give the government a helping hand to stop the ravaging pandemic, and prayed for God’s intervention to put an end to the COVID-19 pandemic in the world.

He said “government at all levels must come out open, clean and transparent on the management of funds meant for fighting coronavirus, so that ordinary people on the street can trust government officers handling the isolation centres and other engagements on the pandemic.

“By doing this, it will be easier for people like us, the NGOs and other volunteers to continue to take awareness campaign to nooks and crannies of our towns and villages with a view to stopping the spread of the pandemic through community infection and other means,” Ogidan stated.

Traders, men and women around the markets were taught how to properly wash their hands, the use of alcohol-based sanitiser, usage of face masks and maintaining physical distancing at all gatherings.

The campaign took the TIE group to major markets such as Isinkan, Isolo, Oja-Oba, and Elemo palace ground, as well as the Benin and Oloko motor parks, all in Akure.(NAN)
