EMMANUEL Oghenejobo, the Pioneer sponsor of annual Agoma Taekwondo Open Championships, says outcome of the progress report of COVID-19 will determine if
the 2020 edition would hold.

Oghenejobo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday that the championships initially scheduled for May 28 to May 31 in Abakiliki, Ebonyi, had been shifted to June due to the ongoing lockdown.

He said that the championships, which recorded participation from across Nigeria and the neighbouring countries, had been consistent as athletes were confident of participating in the event.

“We are supposed to be having the 2020 edition now, but we have shifted the date, just to comply with the situation and restriction order following the outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic in the country.

“At least, the safety of everyone is of much importance, because the spread of Coronavirus is not encouraging; we must collaborate with the efforts of the government to curb further spread.

“We are looking at a tentative date from June 24 to June 27, which will be subject to developments of the lockdown, and the next step or directive from the government and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC),” he told NAN.

Oghenejobo, who participated in the heavyweight category of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, said the 18th edition was held in Kebbi.

According to him, it had 181 athletes from Nigeria, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Ghana, Gabon in Poomsae, Kyopa, Hoshindu and Kyorugi junior and adults categories events.

He described the championships introduced in 2001 as the longest sustained annual event which had produced national champions, African Games champions and Olympians.

“The consistency of Agoma has been instrumental to the career of some of our success taekwondo athletes who in their exceptional performance have won medals in international competitions,” Oghenejobo said.

He added that the tradition of updating its technical officials would still be observed in the 2020 edition, stressing that the Electronic Scoring System (ESS) would also be used for officiating in the competition.
