Palestinian baby with heart problems dies after contracting COVID-19

THE Palestinian Health Ministry on  Tuesday said a 12-day-old Palestinian baby has died after contracting the coronavirus.

The baby was from Hebron, a Palestinian city that has recorded high rates of COVID-19 infection.

He suffered from heart problems which were exacerbated by the virus, which he is believed to have contracted after he was born, according to the ministry.

His first test for COVID-19 came back negative. Another test conducted after four days came back positive.

The baby died at the hospital in Yatta, near Hebron. The ministry is investigating how the baby contracted the virus.

On Monday, the Palestinian Health Ministry announced 342 new coronavirus cases in the West Bank and four deaths, taking the total number of cases in the West Bank to 6,507, with 41 deaths and 1,021 full recoveries.

Of the total number of infections, 4,332 were recorded in the Hebron Governate.

According to Palestinian officials, the surge of infections in the area was due to wedding parties.

A partial lockdown in the West Bank has been extended to two weeks until Sunday morning.

In the Gaza Strip, there have been 72 recorded cases, one death, and 63 recoveries. No new cases have been reported there in over a month.

Israel is meanwhile battling the second wave of infections. A record number of 1,681 infections in 24 hours was recorded on Monday, the Israeli Health Ministry.

There are 21,393 active cases in the country, of which 177 are in serious condition. A total of 368 people have died in Israel as a result of Covid-19.(dpa/NAN)
