THE Serbian Government on Friday declared an emergency situation in the capital Belgrade as a result of a resurging COVID-19 outbreak.
The government also issued restrictive measures and imposed fines for violators
A day earlier, Serbia reported 359 new cases as the epidemic forcefully returned after appearing nearly subdued some two weeks ago.
Four-fifths of the infections occurred in Belgrade, with a population of 1.7 million people and another 800,000 in the wider city area – almost a third of Serbia’s population.
Under the new rules, masks are mandatory in enclosed public areas, cafes, restaurants, and clubs must close between 11 pm and 6 am and public gatherings are limited to 100 people.
Those caught without masks may now be fined with 5,000 dinars (50 dollars). The fine equals roughly 10 percent of the average monthly wage in the country.
The measures mark a turn from the relaxed course Serbia adopted a month earlier when it lifted most of the COVID-19 restrictions and even allowed football and tennis matches with spectators. (dpa/NAN)
