Coronavirus Pandemic

AHMED Shehu, Chairman, Network of Civil Organisations, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), has called on governments at all levels to ensure access to clean water and functional medical facilities in communities to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Shehu who was the chairman of the organisation in Borno State made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday in Abuja.

He also advised the government to deploy health officers in various communities to improve effective communication service delivery by the workers.

He said that such provisions would not only aid in the fight against COVID-19 but would ease and complement efforts of the workers.

He said that coronavirus was affecting all strata of the society, adding that the country was going through a period of immense challenges on a political, social and economic level.

According to him, the Ministry of Water Resources should ensure that water is adequately provided to all localities within the communities during this pandemic, and even after.

“The provision will help the people to maintain the COVID-19 rules, as well as prevent the rapid spread of the disease.

“It is also important to provide essential supplies such as medical equipment, ambulances, personal protective equipment, and more healthcare workers to the local communities.

“The impact of the pandemic has been massive with huge challenges to citizens.

“The civil society network has been working on amplifying the voices of the affected population, with a

view to achieving effective service delivery to citizens.

“It serves as a platform that mainly fills the gap in service delivery and complementing the efforts of all critical stakeholders.

“A situation room of the civil society organisations was commissioned on April 24, to work with the Borno State high powered committee on COVID-19 to achieve its mandates,” he said.

Shehu said that one of the organisation’s objectives was to support awareness campaigns on COVID -19 to help curb the spread.

He added that the organisation was also giving referrals to all suspected victims of COVID-19.

According to him also, the organisation is supporting the committee in ensuring effective public communication on the pandemic in the state.

“Civil Network is supporting the committee in providing mechanisms for quick and immediate response to suspected victims of COVID-19, to avoid further spread.

“This is to serve as the bridge between members of the community and the state high powered committee on COVID-19. (NAN)
