A don has decried the poor encouragement and compliance levels, especially from members of the public to various preventive measures to combat the life threatening COVID-19 pandemic.

Prof. Adenike Oladiji, a former Director, Central Research Laboratories, University of Ilorin, noted: “with the threatening resurgence of the Corona virus disease prevention remains the most potent instrument of halting its spread.”

The don, who was recently inducted into the Fellowship cadre of the Nigerian Academy of Science, expressed satisfaction that the scientists had succeeded in developing the vaccine which would be deployed to the treatment of the disease quicker than it was previously envisaged.

Realnews investigations in Lagos shows an increasing lower levels of public compliance to the recommended wearing of face masks, observance of spacing especially in public spaces , washing of hands and other sanitary and preventive measures  to stem the COVID-19 virus.

Prof. Oladiji advised that everything worth doing should be done to prevent a situation where the cankerworm would be contracted by more people.

Comparing the Nigerian scientists and their colleagues from the advanced countries, Oladiji identified the availability or otherwise of enabling environment. She said with adequate encouragement and funding, Nigerian scientists would successfully work on various scientific explorations and at the exact time.

On the ability of Nigerian scientists to address contemporary challenges in the nation or dominate the field of Science, the don pinpointed lack of encouragement and poor funding as major impediments to the ability of Nigerian scientists to excel.

She remarked that with adequate encouragement and improved access to funds, Nigerian scientists would do better in addressing contemporary challenges in the nation.

Nigerian scientists she said would successfully work on various scientific explorations and at the exact time.
