Coronavirus Pandemic

THE Niger Government on Tuesday vowed to deal decisively with offenders of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Preventive, Containment, and Emergency Order in the state.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Chairman, Niger State Task Force on COVID-19 Pandemic, Ahmed Matane, in Minna.

He said that the warning became necessary following the increase in the number of people infected with COVID-19 in the state.

Matane said that despite public enlightenment and advocacy embarked upon by the task force, residents were still contravening the order.

“It is disappointing to see people flouting the guidelines such as wearing of face mask, physical distancing, regular handwashing with soap under running water and application of hand sanitizers, among others.

“Government views with grave concern the rise in the rate of infection of the virus in the state following the easing of the COVID-19 Preventive, Containment, and Emergency Order.

“Government will not hesitate to restore some guidelines earlier lifted by the government due to non-compliance with the safety protocols of Coronavirus,” he said.

Matane noted that low compliance with the Ministry of Transport guidelines had been observed by operators of private and commercial vehicles, as well as commercial motorcycle operators still plying roads despite the suspension of their activities.

The chairman revealed that in order to bring the situation under control, the State Government has directed security agencies to confiscate any motorcycle flouting the guidelines.

He called on the residents to be law-abiding by complying strictly to the restriction, prohibition or any requirement imposed under the COVID-19 Order. (NAN)
