Crash victims remembrance day: Kaduna state records 1,163 crashes since 2021

THE Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna state, on Wednesday said it recorded 1,163 crashes from January 2021 to October 2022 which resulted in 997 deaths and 4,317 injuries.

The Kaduna state acting sector command,  Garba Lawal, made the disclosure during a two-day ember months safety campaign to commemorate the 2022 world day of remembrance of road traffic crash victims.

“In Kaduna, the road traffic crash statistics stands at 667 crashes in 2021 that resulted in the deaths of 542 people and 2,382 sustained various degrees of injuries.

“In 2022 as at October, there have been 496 crashes resulting in the deaths of 455 people with 1,935 sustaining various degrees of injuries,” he said.

He explained that the most common cause of road traffic in the state was over speeding, wrongful overtaking and driving with worn out or expired tyres.

Lawal urged road users to embrace safe practices while plying the roads and called on government to improve vehicular safety standard through adoption of the safe system approach.

In his keynote address, the Zonal Commanding Officer, RS1 Kaduna, Mr. Godwin Omiko, said the sensitization programme was part of the corps corporate social responsibility to the host community.

“In consideration of our Ember Months enlightenment campaign, the theme for 2022 is “Avoid Speeding, Overloading and Unsafe Tyres to Arrive Alive’’.

“Speeding and overloading account for 56% of fatal crashes on our roads; Bad tyres, have all been implicated in road crashes, hence, we are enjoined to avoid Speeding, Overloading and Unsafe tyres to arrive alive,” he said.

He stated that the two-day programme would feature a lecture presentation on 2022 ember months campaign theme, causes of road traffic crash and effects on family and the economy.

He added that free medical outreach for blood sugar check, Malaria tests, Blood Pressure check and vision acuity test would be conducted along side free vehicle safety check.

Omiko said road safety was everybody’s business and therefore citizens must commit as road safety advocates.

Ibrahim Sunusi, the director of funds, ministry of finance, Kaduna, commended FRSC for the programme and urged all staff to practice road safety and extend the message to their families.
