Applicant faces trial for alleged assault on woman under bridge

A 27-year-old man, Emmanuel Nkwo, on Tuesday, appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly assaulting a woman under the Orile-Iganmu bridge.

The defendant, whose address was not provided in court, is facing one count charge of assault occasioning harm, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Insp Mariam Dauda, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Sept. 7, at about 9.50 p.m. under Orile-iganmu bridge, Lagos.

Dauda alleged that the defendant assaulted one Miss Sabinah Owah, the complainant, by hitting her face with his fists.

According to her, the complainant sustained serious injuries on her face, which caused her a swollen face.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (Revised)

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates a three-year jail term for the offence of assault occasioning harm for any convicted offender.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Ajibade, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N60,000 with one surety in like sum.

She ruled that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

Ajibade adjourned the case until Oct. 2 for mention.
