THE suspected kidnappers of the wife of one of Norway’s wealthiest businessmen have sent a new message stating that she is alive, the family attorney said on Tuesday.

Anne-Elisabeth Falkevik Hagen, 69, went missing from her Lorenskog home in Akershus County, near Oslo, on October 31.

Attorney Svein Holden said the July 8 message clearly states that Hagen is alive but added that it was not proof of life, in comments to reporters in Oslo.

He said the message was written in Norwegian.

The lawyer said several messages have been exchanged, but declined to say when the latest message was received.

In late June, police said that Hagen might have been murdered and were working on the assumption that her disappearance was an attempt to cover up the suspected killing.

They based their hypothesis on a lack of proof of life and a long period without contact from the alleged kidnappers.

Police were expected to give an update later on Wednesday.

Holden declined to comment on Tuesday on recent media reports that a sum of 10 million kroner (1.1 million dollars) was paid to the suspected kidnappers.

Tom Hagen is an investor with business interests in power generation and real estate, estimated to be worth 1.7 billion kroner (200 million dollars), according to financial site Kapital.

Police went public about the disappearance on January 9.
