A 28-year-old barman, Emmanuel Okachi, was on Tuesday docked at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on a charge of stabbing a cook with a broken bottle.

Okachi, a resident of Shomolu, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty of the one- count charge of assault.

According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Matthew Akhaluode, the defendant committed the offence on July 28 in Ilupeju area of Lagos.

Akhaluode told the court that the defendant assaulted his colleague and complainant, Mrs Abigail Ede, by using a broken beer bottle to stab her on the shoulder which caused her harm.

“The complainant and the defendant both work in a hotel.

“There was a disagreement between them during which the defendant broke a bottle on her head and stabbed her on the shoulder.

“The complainant was rushed to the hospital while the defendant was arrested,” he said.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates three years imprisonment for assault.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.A Akokhia, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Akokhia said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government (LASG).

She adjourned the case until Sept.19 for mention.
