AN Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama, Jos, on Tuesday sentenced two businessmen – Muftahu Ahmed and Bashiru Umar – to three years’ imprisonment each for conspiracy and theft of cables.

The businessmen had pleaded guilty to a two-point charge of conspiracy and stealing during their arraignment.

The Judge, Mr Yahaya Mohammed, however, gave Ahmed, 24, and Umar, 22, an option of fine.

Mohammed gave the convicts an option to pay N25, 000 each or be jailed for two years for conspiracy.

He held that the convicts should be jailed for a year or pay N10, 000 fine each for theft.

The judge also ordered that the convicts should pay compensation of N15, 000 each to their victim, a private company, warning that failure would earn them additional three months’ imprisonment each.

The judge said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in criminal acts.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Mr Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on July 1 at the Nassarawa Gwong Police Station, by a youth Leader, Mr Aslom Agwom of Gwafan, Jos.
