THE National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday, filed charges against a 34-year-old man, Sodiq Adekunle, before a Federal High Court in Lagos, for allegedly peddling 59 wraps of Cannabis Sativa.

In the charge numbered FHC/L/197c/2020, the NDLEA Prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, alleged that the defendant committed the offence on June 1.

Aernan said that the defendant was arrested on a tip-off at the Anibaba area of Ikorodu, a Lagos suburb, with a total of 59 wraps of cannabis sativa, which were all concealed with pawpaw leaves.

He said that the defendant was unlawfully selling the drug in the area.

According to the prosecutor, cannabis is listed in the third schedule of the NDLEA as a restricted narcotic similar to Cocaine and Heroine LSD.

Aernan said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation 2004.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Act provides for a term of life imprisonment if found guilty of the offence of drug trafficking. A date is yet to be fixed for the arraignment of the defendant. (NAN)
