TWO house agents, Matthew Alabi and Adenike Quadry , on Tuesday appeared at an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly obtaining N680,000 from five accommodation seekers on the pretence of letting ‘self-contained’ apartments to them.

The Police arraigned Alabi, 56, and Quadry, 59, on charges of conspiracy, obtaining under false pretence and manner likely to cause breach of the peace.

They, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Sgt.  Augustine Chukwuocha, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on July 30 at Apapa Road, Ebute Meta West and Lagos.

Chukwuocha said the defendants obtained a total of N680, 000 from five people to let ‘self-contained’ apartments to them, a representation they knew was false.

He said the defendants converted the money to their personal use.

Chukwuocha said the offences contravened Sections 168(d), 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 411 stipulates two years jail term for conspiracy.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs J Ajayi, granted the duo bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with two sureties in like sum.

Ajayi ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of three years tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

She directed that one of the sureties should own a landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

The case was adjourned until Sept. 24 for mention.
