THE Nigeria Police Force highest command has dissociated itself from the raid carried by some Policemen on the residence of Edwin Clark, an elder statesman and a former federal Commissioner of Information on Tuesday, September 4. A statement signed by Moshood Jimoh, Police spokesman, said that Ibrahim Idris, the inspector general of Police, was not aware of the raid and did not order it.

Consequently, Moshood said that Idris had directed the detention and investigation of the four Police personnel and the informant involved in the raid. He also said that the outcome of the preliminary investigation into the matter be made public.

“Notwithstanding, the facts that on daily basis the Nigeria Police Force across the Country receives information from members of the public which were promptly used to prevent and detect crimes and Criminalities, the Force will not condone misconducts by any of its personnel that can run contrary to the rule of law. The Police, therefore, has the statutory rights to execute a duly obtained search warrant in any premises where it has actionable intelligence or information that incriminating items or exhibits used to commit crime or about to be used for criminality with the aims of recovering them to prevent the commission of such crime or to detect the crime that have been committed,” the Police said.

The force said that any officer who is to carry out the execution of search warrant must follow the laid down procedures within the law. It warned that where such is not followed, the officer will be made to face the consequences of violating the rule of law.

The Police gave the names of those carried out the raid as David Dominic, an assistant superintendent; Godwin Musa, Sada Abubakar and Yabo Paul, all inspectors as well as Ismail Yakubu, an informant from Waru Village, Apo District, Abuja.

According to the Police statement, the officer that led the team has been queried and the three inspectors are currently undergoing orderly trial for the appropriate punishment to be meted out on them.

Nevertheless, the IGP is said to have sent high powered delegation, led by a DIG and other senior Police officers to apologise to Clark over the search by the Policemen. The delegation was reportedly received by Clark and the Police apology was accepted by him.

In any case, the Police said that Yakubu, the informant would be arraigned in court this morning, Wednesday, September 5, “for giving false information and telling falsehood to mislead police action.”
