The Nigeria Customs Service on Wednesday vowed to intensify its anti-smuggling drive at its Kwara Outstation, to eradicate illegal importation of goods into the state.

Mr Umar Abubakar, the Deputy Comptroller of Customs, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin.

Abubakar said that many smugglers entered the state through the borders on motorcycles and tricycles, but the customs would continue to arrest them.

“The smugglers do not mind the number of times they transport their products into the state on motorcycles or tricycles, in as much as they are able to achieve their aim.

“These people have reached an agreement with the villagers, by paying them some money; so, they already have where they are keeping their goods when they enter the state.

“We now have informants, to enable us to stop the act,” Abubakar said.

The customs official said that the anti-smuggling drive was a continuous action.

NAN reports that the agency seized 8, 413 bags of smuggled rice and 524 gallons of vegetable oil in December 2018 in the state. (NAN)
