Mexico will bid to retain their continental Gold Cup title against the hosting U.S after the duo won tight semi-final matches over Canada and Qatar respectively late Thursday.

Hector Herrera struck the decisive goal for El Tri nine minutes into injury-time against the battling Canadians to secure a 2-1 victory.

Orbelin Pineda had opened the scoring for Mexico with a penalty in first-half added time only for Tajon Buchanan to level in the 57th minute.

The U.S also struck late, through Gyasi Zardes in the 86th minute, to defeat 2022 World Cup hosts and 2019 Asian champions Qatar.

The Asians were seeking to become the first guest team to win the showpiece tournament of the North and Central American CONCACAF region.

The final takes place at Paradise in Nevada on Sunday, in a repeat of the 2019 clash won 1-0 by record champions Mexico.

The Mexicans have 11 continental titles with the U.S holding a second-best six.(dpa/NAN)
