DEPUTY Gov. Ude Chukwu of Abia has lauded the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in the state for being positive in its reportage about the state.

Chukwu spoke on Thursday, when the new executive of the chapel, led by Chief Obinna Ibe, visited him in his office in Umuahia.

He said that members of the chapel had been friendly, using their respective media platforms to promote government’s policies and programmes.

He said that although the correspondents might not be Abia indigenes, they live an work in the state.
“So, whatever happens in the state affects you, hence you have been responsible and fair in your reportage of the affairs of the state.

“Whatever you write or chose to say about the state, the public will believe you.

“The media have the power to make or mar any government or institution through their reportage.

“I request that you continue to market Abia in such a manner that people will come to invest in this state.

“Abia is a growing concern and the process is ongoing but the most important thing is that Abia must be better,” the deputy governor said.

He expressed disappointment in some persons that engaged in acts that tended to demarket the state.
He said: “Demarketing the state means reporting the state in bad light.

“This is capable of scaring away potential investors from the state and the impact will also affect you negatively.

“As a government, we will continue to do what we are supposed to do to foster good relationship between the government and the media.

Chukwu said that Abia had enjoyed relative peace and that it “arguably remained the most peaceful state in the country in recent time”.

He congratulated the chapel on the inauguration of its new executive.

He gave assurance that the relationship between his office and the group would continue to flourish.
Earlier, the Chairman of the chapel hailed the deputy governor for his demonstrable loyalty and enduring legacies in the governance of the state.

Ibe highlighted some of the challenges faced by the chapel to include the lack of operational vehicle.
He recalled that Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu had at different fora in 2018 and 2019 made pledges to the chapel but had yet to redeem them.

“The situation, notwithstanding, we had resolved that we shall work for the betterment of the state,” Ibe said.

He said that the visit was primarily to present to him the chapel’s new officers, who would pilot the affairs of the body for three years.

The seven-member executive included Mr Leonard Okachie of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who is the Assistant Secretary. (NAN)
