Driver docked for allegedly causing death of cyclist, passenger

A 47-year-old driver, Musibau Alabi on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged reckless driving that led to the death of a cyclist and his passenger.

The police charged Alabi, whose address was not provided, with driving against traffic, reckless driving,  driving without a valid driving licence and manslaughter.

The Prosecution Counsel, ASP Kehinde Ajayi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Sept. 3 along Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway, near the Pleasure Bus stop, Agege in Lagos State.

Ajayi alleged that the defendant drove his M/Benz truck against traffic in a dangerous manner and knocked down a cyclist, Mr Farouq Umar, 24 and his passenger- Wasiu Adeola, 20.

She said that the defendant had no valid driving licence. The prosecutor also alleged that the victim died before they could be rushed to the hospital.

She said that the offences contravened Sections 50(1), 51(1) and 52 of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law Regulation 2018.

She added that the defendant also contravened Schedule 1 of the Lagos State Offences and Penalty Law of Lagos State Road Traffic Law Regulation 2018.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Chief Magistrate O.A. Ajibade admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Ajibade adjourned the case until Nov. 25 for DPP advice. (NAN)
