CHARLESYE Charles, President,Nigerian Institute of Surveyors (NIS), has called on the Federal Government to establish a legal regulatory framework for the implementation of  the National Public Buildings Maintenance Policy.

Charles made the call at the stakeholders’ workshop on Draft National Public Building Maintenance Policy in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN), reports that the workshop was organised by the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.

The Draft National Public Buildings Maintenance Policy seeks to provide guiding principles for the maintenance and repairs of public buildings.

It is also charged with the responsibility of repairing such related assets nationwide, in compliance with extant regulations.

According to Charles, for the policy to be effective and consistent, a legal framework has to be on ground within the jurisdiction, n a sustainable outlay.

“It must also meet incremental flexibilities and operational systems with time.

“It is, therefore, imperative to have a very strong institution that will be saddled with this responsibility,” he said.

Charles advised that the appointment of members of the board and management of the institution should be purely on professional competence.

He further said that the importance of maintenance of public buildings should not be over emphasised; as such, the establishment of a strong institution for that purpose would be critical.

“Also, there should be a formidable monitoring team to check possible excesses and abuse in the course of its implementation, particularly field operations”
