Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo has called on the management of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to set up farm settlements in Imo for corps members.

Okorocha made the call on Monday at the official closing ceremony of 2018 Batch B Stream 11 Orientation Course of corps members held at the Orientation Camp in Eziama Obaire in Nkwerre Local Government area of the state.

He was represented by the state Commissioner for Talent and Youth Development who is also the Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board, Mr Ifeanyichukwu Onwueyiagba.

Okorocha said that establishment of farm settlements would boost food production and wealth creation, stressing that the importance of agriculture to the nation’s economy could not be over emphasised.

The governor said that the NYSC had lived up to its expectation in the state with the corps members doing exceedingly well in the education, health and agriculture sectors.

Okorocha harped on the importance of good governance and security, adding that no meaningful development could take place in an unstable and insecure society.

He said his government would continue to provide the necessary support, assistance and enabling environment for the scheme to realise its goals and meet its objectives.

The NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Sunday Aroni, urged the corps members to put into practise all they learnt in the camp, especially on security, channel of communication, voter education, drug abuse and disaster management.

He said that skill acquisition training would be continued at the various centers during their primary assignment.

Aroni said this would help them to create wealth and fight unemployment and poverty.

He said the NYSC management would continue to sensitise employers of labour on the need to accept corps members posted to their organistaions.

The state coordinator expressed gratitude to the state government and personnel of collaborating agencies (army, police, civil defence, NDLEA, Red Cross etc) for support and for discharging their duties creditably and responsibily.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 1,917 corps members from Imo and Abia were deployed to the state in the batch.(NAN)
