THE Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has lifted the sanctions imposed on Mali, following the military coup that toppled the administration of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. The decision of ECOWAS to lift the sanctions was based on significant advances toward a return to democracy in the country.

In a communiqué signed by President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana and chairman, ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, called on all bilateral and multilateral partners to support Mali. The Heads of State and Government also demanded that the new authorities of the Transition in Mail must implement other decisions of the ECOWAS Summit held in Accra, Ghana on September 15.

ECOWAS also called on the transitional authorities to release all remaining detainees arrested since the August 18 coup, when democratically elected President Keita was forced to resign after the junta surrounded his home and fired shots into the air.

The regional bloc had insisted that the transitional government be headed by civilians, though junta leader Col. Assimi Goita is staying on as vice president.
