IT WAS one joke that the newly registered All Progressives Congress, APC, will have to contend with during the electioneering campaign. Even though it was supposed to be an innocuous joke from Bisi Akande, the chairman of the APC, it has reverberated across the political firmament and certainly taking the shine off the most important thing the new party has to do – convince Nigerians that it is a better alternative to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which has been in power since the current civilian dispensation started in 1999. Akande might not have meant it when he invited Jonathan to join the APC if the crisis in PDP was becoming too much for him. But spin doctors from Jonathan’s side have portrayed Akande’s invitation as a notable sign that the newly registered party does not have any credible person to fly the party’s flag in the forthcoming 2015 presidential election. It also portrayed the party as being only interested in wining power just for its sake with anybody who appears to be better placed to achieve that.

Despite the feeble attempt that has been made by members of the APC to whittle down the adverse effect of the joke on the image of the party, Nigerians know better and will be waiting for the right time to show whom they think was better placed to lead Nigerians to the elusive Eldorado. This Notwithstanding, Nigerians are equally more interested in seeing the manifesto of the new party and its ideology which, hitherto, has been shrouded in secrecy. As part of our functions to educate Nigerians on what the new party is all about despite the hot vibes over Akande’s unfortunate joke which tend to overshadow the real issues about the new party, Realnews editorial board decided to ferret the party’s manifesto and lay it bare for the public to digest to be able to make rational decisions as to which party to vote into power during the election. The details of the manifesto and other germane issues about the APC is contained in our cover story for this week entitled: The APC Challenge: Can it Provide A Better Alternative to the PDP. It was written by Olu Ojewale, our general editor. Enjoy it.

  1. I WAS A FORMER ELECTORAL COMMISSIONER AND A PROFESSIONAL TEACHER:
As a former electoral commissioner in Anambra State, I first of all congratulate APC. The new party is a good development. It makes for healthy competition to give Nigerians the best. But I know that only God will choose the next President of Nigeria.

Until we hear clearly from him, like in 2011, we cannot say who or which party that will win. We knew that He gave it to Jonathan; and we wrote it. Until we hear from Him.

Both PDP and APC are all Nigerians, and they are all my brothers and sisters; so, I will support any party that the Almighty God places at Aso-Rock. The bible says ‘pray for those in authority’. Every good teacher loves her children equally. My profession and former office is shaping my attitude. I cannot be partisan!
