At least, 25, 000 students of Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, have registered for the National Health Insurance Scheme, (NHIS), according to Abdulsalam Uba-Jogana, the Manager, Kano State branch of Manage Health Care Servic (MHCS).

Uba-Jogana disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Monday.

NAN reports that MHCS is one of the accredited National Health Manage Organisations (HMOs) to participate in NHIS in the country.

He said the registered students had started enjoying the NHIS services at their chosen health facilities in Sokoto.

“Each student paid N2, 000 and they are expected to be paying the same amount every session.

“All registered students are also expected to enjoy all benefits while they are exempted from paying the 10 per cent in the programme.

“So, registered students will enjoy free health care services annually after paying the N2, 000,” Uba-Jogana said.

He called on other higher institutions in the country to key into the programme, to enable their students benefit from the programme.

“The advantage of the programme cannot be overemphasised considering the benefit students stand to get when they are sick or need health care services.”

He also called on Kano State Government to support its own tertiary institutions to register their students, in view of the benefits of the programme.

“A student can fall sick at any given time and if he or she is registered he or she does not need to go back home and seek medical attention from parents.

“The health contributory scheme, introduced by Kano State Government for its workers will enable them access medical services at subsidised rate like their counterparts at the Federal Civil service. (NAN)
