THE Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Vincent Okpala, has inaugurated the Primary Health Centre built by the Umudioka Community in Awka South Local Government Area, LGA.

The Commissioner urged stakeholders and communities to emulate them.

He emphasised that the state government’s interest was to ensure that the six basic building blocks of healthcare was achieved, one of which was good healthcare delivery service to the people.

“It has been our intention for stakeholders and communities to partner with us in providing quality healthcare centres across the state; we are committed to providing enabling environment for the partnership.

“We are satisfied at the quality of facilities we have inaugurate here and we will ensure adequate personnel to be deployed here,’’ he added.

The Commissioner explained that the goal of the ministry was to work on every facet of a strengthened health system, man power development and human resources, which was a struggle to keep every resource together.

“At the primary level, we have officers in charge and nurses that work in facilities; so right now we have some of them working in this centre and what we do is to supplement them with a physician.

“We also have work plan, where visiting doctors will be covering all the facilities just like Dr Anayo Onalu, Head Department of Health, Awka South.

“This centre was built by one of their sons as a constituency project about three years ago, but not completed or equipped, but the community on their own decided to complete it and hand it over to the government.

“They saw the need to finish this project, it is something that should be emulated by other ward’s and stakeholders from different communities as well.’’

Simeon Onyemaechi, Executive Secretary, Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA), noted that out of 262 facilities enlisted for the implementation of the agency, not less than 60 of them were Primary Health Centres across the state.

The ASHIA boss said the centre would help to give people, especially those in rural areas access to quality healthcare service delivery.

“If we have quality healthcare centres in the state and people cannot access them, then the purpose is defeated.

“WHO recommends five kilometres radius for people to have access to quality healthcare centres; so, that spurred Umudioka people to ensure this project is actualized,’’ he said.

Onyemaechi stressed the need for a patient to be stabilised before he or she receives next level of medical care.

“This is done through robust referral system which is the reason why Primary Health Centres are being used for ASHIA,” he added.

He thanked the Government for good policies and initiative in implementing the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme, while appealing to the commissioner to help to deploy more medical personnel to the centres.

“We put resources together to ensure that our people receive quality healthcare services from this centre,’’ he said.

He, however, explained that the centre is qualified and has been accredited and enlisted among other centres for the implementation of ASHIA in the state.
