THE All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPPS) on Friday urged Federal Government to refurbish science laboratories in secondary schools to encourage students to study science subjects.

The Chairman, Anambra chapter of ANCOPSS, Mrs Judy Eke, made the call in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

She said most science subjects required hands-on experimentation for easy learning, noting, however, that science labs in some public schools were dilapidated, which deterred some students from developing interest in science subjects.

She added that “everything around us now are scientifically and technologically-driven, and for us to ensure that Nigeria develops in this area, we need to start from secondary schools.

“Government should in the first place renovate school science labs and equip them with modern tools that will enhance learning and attract more students to study science subjects.”

She said some secondary school students had ideas which they had developed into diverse technological equipment, but could not enhance the equipment due to lack of tools and the right atmosphere to excel.

She, therefore, stressed the need for government to encourage such students to improve on their ideas.

She explained that some students participated in science quiz competitions at state levels, but when they qualify to participate at federal level, such competitions were not held at that level, making such students to be discouraged.

“The point is that students have ideas and innovations, but when such innovations are not encouraged, they will not be willing to go further,” Eke said.

The president decried the lack of knowledgeable teachers in some secondary schools across states and called for regular training to refresh them.

Eke also called for pay hike and allowances for science teachers to motivate them.  (NAN)
