Anthony Kifordu has lauded the Federal Government over its plan to declare a state of emergency in the education sector, describing it as “timely and realistic”.

Kifordu, a lecturer at the Edo State University Iyamoh told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that all tiers of government should support the plan by giving education a priority.

According to him, Nigeria’s education sector is in near comatose; therefore implementation of educational effective policies must be made uniform across the country.

“Our primary and secondary education is nothing to be proud of as they produce materials without basic content expected at those levels.

“Higher schools especially in the public domain are underfunded hence the poor quality outputs most especially the undergraduate level.

“Even the privately-owned higher schools are practically not living up to the expectations as the private funds expended to run the institutions cannot close the gap created by publicly-owned ones.

“Nigeria’s poor quality products from the education sector are evident from our continued reliance on foreign technology, skills and practices in our way of life,” he said.

He stressed the need for many state governments to review their policies on primary education and upgrade them to modern standards.

“Evidence of a failing primary education sub-sector can be seen in the poor reading, writing and speaking skills exhibited by pupils.

“There is no doubt that many of our primary school leavers lack the basic thinking faculty expected of them,” the don said.

Kifordu called for a concerted effort by the federal, state and local governments to formulate the right policies for primary and secondary administration.

He advised that the recruitment of professional teachers would help revamp both primary and secondary education, in addition to their regular training and retraining.

NAN reports that Malam Adamu Adamu, the Minister of Education in Jan. said the Federal Government would declare a state of emergency in the education sector.

NAN also reports that the resolution followed a call from the National Council on Education, urging state governments to support the initiative by increasing budgetary allocations for the sector.

Part of the proposal is to engage graduates of education into the teaching profession on Grade Level 10. (NAN)
