KANAYO Onalu, Head of Health Unit, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra, has called on parents to aid their children in choosing their careers instead of making the choice for them.
Onalu made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Monday. He advised parents to find out the passion of their children and encourage them to follow their heart in choosing their life careers in order to gain job satisfaction and uphold professionalism.
He said that parents who chose careers for their children were being selfish and doing society great harm, describing the act as unethical.
“Most of the young graduates who failed to do well in their careers claimed they read a course to please their parents.
“They claimed that if they were left alone, they would have studied a different course.
“Some parents preferred some field of studies like medicine and law, among others, and they pressured their children to take such courses.
“Unfortunately, such act had reduced the educational standard of the nation,” Onalu said.
He said that parents should recognise that God had created every person with particular talent and any deviation would lead to the lack of job satisfaction.
“Discover your children’s passion and encourage them to go for it so they can find lasting joy in doing their life careers.
“Parents should learn  to appreciate the good behavior of their children as such commendation would spur them to behave better,” he said.
