Ex-international Mutiu Adepoju says he is proud to have attended the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria Staff School, Ibadan, Oyo State.

The former midfielder’s declaration comes after an ex-pupil of the school ‘Tunji Ajibade accused him of repeatedly refusing to mention the name of his primary school in a TV interview last month.

In his piece in The PUNCH’s View Point on Friday titled “How ex-Eagles player, MutiuAdepoju, upsets me.” Ajibade wrote, “But it’s in regard to our primary school that he (Adepoju) has upset me. Not at that time, but lately on August 12, 2018 when an interview he gave was aired on TV.

“Adepoju was asked about his football career, how he started. He said it was right from childhood, in primary school. On about six occasions as he responded to follow-up questions, Adepoju said his exploits as a footballer began in primary school. Each time, I waited eagerly for him to mention the name of the primary school. He didn’t. This upsets me more than the reader could imagine.”

But Adepoju told our correspondent that he had never been ashamed of attending CRIN Staff School, which he described as one of the best schools in Ibadan.

“I’m not ashamed of attending CRIN Staff School, I’ve mentioned it everywhere I’ve been. I’ve done over a thousand interviews in which I’ve always mentioned CRIN Staff School, where I grew up and started my football,” Adepoju said.

“A telecoms firm did a documentary on me, I took them there and they recorded me on the field where I started playing football inside CRIN School.

“This I guess, the writer of the piece didn’t know. Probably he hadn’t read my past interviews where I spoke about CRIN School. If he had done his research and seen my past interviews on how I grew up, he would have seen it there.

“My father was a staff of CRIN and we grew up inside the institute, a big establishment, which had a school that had children of CRIN staff and kids from outside attending.” – Punch
