THE Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu has called on the Igbo Youth Assembly, a Pan-Igbo Socio-Cultural Youth Organisation, to promote education for every youth of the Igbo extraction.

The minister made the call in a statement signed by Mrs Chinenye Ihuoma, Director of Press in the ministry, in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Minister made the call when the group visited the ministry to indicate its desire to extend the sensitisation campaign on promotion of peace to schools.

According to Adamu, the practice by many Igbo parents to train few of their children to the university level and depriving some others in favour of business is not in the interest of national development.

He also noted that in the North, many parents fail to send their wards to school because they believe it does not guarantee automatic employment.

Adamu, however, said that it was better to be educated and be unemployed than to be uneducated and unemployed.

He, therefore, called on the group to go back to their domain and work for education in Igbo land.

The minister also commended members of the Igbo Youth Assembly for its commitment towards promotion of national unity and peace.

Mr Sonny Echono, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, said that the Federal Government strongly believed that the future of the country belonged to the youth.

Echono said the desire of the Igbo Youth Assembly to promote national integration was patriotic and should be emulated.

He also noted the commitment of the Federal Government towards addressing the infrastructure needs in the South East.

Earlier, President of the Igbo Youth Assembly, Mr Benard Nwaudunna, said the group was a Pan-Igbo Socio-Cultural Youth Organisation, geared towards contributing meaningfully to peace, unity, education and national integration of Nigeria.

According to him, Peace and unity is our slogan. Youth education is necessary for attainment of their objective.

He stressed that it was the responsibility of all to ensure peace and unity was sustained in the country.

He said that a campaign programme, “Use Education To Kill Corruption,” had been launched at Boys Secondary School Ezzamgbo in Ebonyi State and Government Secondary School Amanze, Obowo in Imo State.

Nwaudunna said that unholy adventure by some youths such as robbery, kidnapping, insurgency and separatist tendencies were being promoted by corrupt leaders.

He, therefore, added that there was need to awaken the consciousness of the youth to the menace. (NAN)
