The National Institute for Nigerian Languages (NINLAN), Aba has secured the approval of National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) to run 19 courses at National Certificate of Education (NCE) levels, an official has said.
The Executive Director of the institute, Prof. Obiajulu Emejulu, disclosed this on Wednesday at a news conference at the institute’s main campus located at Akpaa Mbaato in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia.
Emejulu said the approval was in line with Act 50 which established the institution and mandated it to run Diploma, Certificate and Degree programmes in Nigerian Languages.
“While efforts are afoot to bring the degree programme to fruition, the institute has now got the approvals of NCCEducation to commence NCE programme.
“I am therefore happy to announce that NINLAN will commence its NCE programme this 2019/2020 academic year, in the following 19 courses.
“Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Kanuri, Efik, Tiv, Fulfulde, English Language, General Education, Business Education, French, Mathematics, Biology, Computer Science.
“Others are Agricultural Science, Social Studies, Christian Religious Knowledge, Primary Education, Early Childhood Care and Education,” he said.
Emejulu expressed the hope that the encumbrances in running degree courses in NINLAN would be overcome soon.
He said that combining language courses with sciences would help to develop manpower for Nigeria’s industrial development.
He further said that graduates of the NCE programme would be admitted into the institute’s degree programme by direct entry, when it takes off.
NAN reports that before now, the institute had been running only diploma and post graduate diploma courses in Nigerian Languages from the institute’s School of Teachers Education and School of Arts.
Emejulu also announced the listing of the institution by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to enable prospective students to process their admission through the board.
He said the NCCE approval would boost the school’s student population by 2020 academic session and ensure its listing in the 2020 JAMB brochure.
He, therefore, sought for N20 billion grant from the Federal Government to enable the institute to erect structures, equip offices and acquire necessary human and material resources to cater for the envisaged increase in student population.
He said that the institution required a standard library, vehicles, office equipment, new office blocks, communication and laboratory equipment, among other things, to be able to meet its new role.
Emejulu, a professor of Communication and Language Arts, called on key stakeholders in the South-East, especially the governors and Nigerians in general, to come to the institute’s aid.
He expressed confidence that the institute would overcome its challenges, if given the necessary support.
He also called on key stakeholders, including educationists, to work toward the amendment of the NINLAN Act.
He said that the amendment would help the institute to realise its mandate of developing Nigerian Languages and people.(NAN)
