THE Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) on Monday, donated furniture to Sheik Abubakar Gumi Primary School, Tudun Wada, Kaduna, to improve learning outcomes in the school.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, NPA, Hadiza Bala Usman, handing over the furniture in Kaduna, said that the gesture was parts of the agency’s corporate social responsibility.
Usman, who was represented by NPA’s Principal Manager, Procurement, Alhaji Aliyu Nakamba, said that the donation was facilitated by an ex-pupil of the school, Alhaji Shehu Yaro, the agency’s General Manager Procurement.
She said that the intervention comprised of 300 desks and chairs for the pupils and 20 chairs and tables for teachers.
According to her, the donation was part of NPA’s support to the Kaduna State Government’s efforts to improve the quality of teaching and learning in primary schools.
“We realise that pupils are learning on the bare floor in the school due to inadequate furniture, and no effective learning will take place under this condition.
“So we decided to intervene by donating this furniture to improve the learning environment of the school and will do more,” she said.
On his part, Yaro, who graduated from the school in 1976, called on corporate organisations, individuals and other stakeholders to support the government in providing quality education in the state.
Represented by Hajiya Asabe Mu’azu, another ex-pupil of the school, Yaro urged the pupils to learn to give a helping hand where necessary as a way of giving back to society.
He advised the pupils to study hard and grow to contribute to the development of the state and the country.
The Chairman, Board of Trustee of the school’s Old Pupils Association, Dudu Mohammed, said that the school needs more of such gesture, stressing that many of the classrooms were without chairs.
Receiving the items, Executive Chairman, Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board, Malam Abdullahi Sani, thanked NPA for the support.
Sani, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the board, Hajiya Amina Ikara, said efforts are underway to improve infrastructure in more than 4000 primary schools in the state.
He urges other old pupils to emulate Yaro by supporting their respective schools with a view to providing quality education in the state.
The Head Teacher, Hajiya Larai Nasiru, also thanked NPA for the laudable gesture and called for more support from other relevant stakeholders. (NAN)
