ANAMBRA State Government has called on teachers to be diligent and committed toward the discharge their duties.

Governor Willie Obiano made the call when he received members of the Reading Association of Nigeria, RAN, at Government House, Awka.

RAN is non-profit professional association registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. They aim at promoting literacy and reading nation-wide.

The governor pointed out that the attitude of non-commitment being exhibited by teachers toward high populated classrooms, inadequate reading and teaching materials were some of the challenges facing the education sector.

“The greatest asset of any nation is on its education. Nigeria is not spending up to the 26 per cent, UN stipulated GDP on education.

“Teaching profession is a call and teachers are meant to understand the needs of their students,” Obiano said.

He noted his administration’s proactive measures toward improving the sector, stressing the state’s readiness to create more enabling environment for quality education.

Nkem Okeke, the deputy governor, who represented Obiano at the event, in him own speech, commended the activities of RAN to the state.

“As a state, if we are able to produce better teachers, we will have better students. Children are our future and that is why we need to do what is right for them,” Okeke stressed.

Kate Omenugha, the Anambra commissioner for Education, said Anambra had been partnering with RAN in building capacities of teachers, to help them in making the classroom lively and creative.

She noted that the partnership had yielded positively in organising a literacy festival for school children; the 20 minutes uninterrupted reading sessions in schools.

The commissioner also noted that there was recent training programme for all primary school teachers in the state.

“I am pleased that those programmes have brought out the best in teachers, and the students are happy.’’

Emeka Onukogu, the BOT chairman of RAN, commended the state government on the developments in the state as well as the state’s use of RAN in reaching the students.

He stressed the need for adoption of the continuous assessment process, rather than the testing system being practiced in Nigeria.

“Anambra has the most active and vibrant members of RAN,” Onukogu said.
