Irene Menakaya Nursery and Primary School, Onitsha has launched an appeal fund to enable the management of the school to restore full services to the school after wind stormed damaged some parts of the school.

The devastating damage, the third in series since the school took off forced the authorities to restrict teaching to only a part of the school.

The extensive damage had occurred shortly after the authorities completed repairs on the school destroyed by landing of a helicopter at Chuba Ikpeazu Memorial Stadium, Onitsha in 2017.

Before the damages, the schools had been providing conducive learning environment for some children in Onitsha metropolis.

1. Chukwukelu, managing director of the school, who spoke to newsmen in Onitsha on Wednesday, June 20, said the winds pulled off part of the roof of 3 classrooms and deposited on the fence to the Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium.

In the process the damaged also affected the fence of the stadium too.

“It could have been worse if the damage had not occurred at night time. It happened at night when nobody was in the school,’’ she added.

According to her the storm damaged three classrooms housing the Teachers Resource Centre and a computer room.

“The damage affected some the computers, many books in the newly constructed resource centre, teachers’ tables and chairs,’’ Chukwukelu said.

She disclosed that this ugly incident was the third since inception of the school. It occurred in 2007, 2017 and 2018.

Chukwukelu said that building contractors have confirmed that the only way to stop a re-occurrence would be by decking the building.

“We have gone through hard times in repairing previous damages so, we shall need the assistance of Government and public spirited individuals to deck the building.

“We cannot fix the problem all over again without support.

“As part of remedial measure to keep our services to our pupils, merged classes in order to accommodate our pupils there by making the classrooms too congested.

“The teachers at the moment do not have staff room,’’ she said.

Meanwhile debris litters the premises as well as parts of damaged computers.

The school presently has shut down its library as the roof of the affected classrooms had yet to been rebuilt.

The school bursar, who was on ground at the time, said the school presently has not less than 200 pupils in both primary and nursery sections.
