THE National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has dissociated itself from Ogun chapter of the association’s statement, condemning closure of schools to contain spread of the Corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Mr Azeez Adeyemi, National Public Relations Officer, NANS, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, in Abuja.

Adeyemi said that the Ogun Chairman of NANS, Tomiwa Bamgbose, was quoted by one of the national dailies on March 25, as saying the `decision was not the right step to take’.

“The Ogun NANS chairman was also quoted to have said he was not in support of government’s action because the deadly Corona virus was not widespread in Nigeria compared to countries like Italy and Spain.

“He is not speaking on behalf of the entire students community in the state and the country at large, but has only expressed his personal opinion.

“The author of the statement has only expressed his own personal opinion as a citizen, which he has the right to do.

“However, we want to emphatically say that his position is not the general view of the students community in the state, neither is it the general opinion of the national body of NANS in the country.

The NANS spokesperson said Bamgbose could not speak for the entire Nigerian students because he was just a state chairman out of many other chairmen and national leaders.

“He is in no position to speak on behalf of the entire students’ population in the country.

“Corona virus affects the entire world; and it is a matter that should not be toyed with.

“It is our believe that all hands must be on deck to fight this deadly disease called Corona virus.

“Therefore, we urge all students in the country, both at federal and state levels, to disregard this reckless statement as it does not represent the general opinion of students in Nigeria,” Adeyemi said. (NAN)
