THE University of Benin (UNIBEN) Alumni Association, on Monday, began distribution of food items worth #500,000 to 50 financial members in Lagos to cushion the effects of the lockdown of the state on them.

Mr. Stephen Onojomete, Chairman, Lagos State chapter of the association, made this known to newsmen in Lagos.

Onojomete said that the decision was in line with the association’s policy of giving back to members and alma mater as the Coronavirus pandemic bites harder on Lagos residents.

He said: “We have decided to begin distribution of welfare packages to our eligible members so as to alleviate their challenges in the days ahead.

“We may also get to a point where supposedly non-indigent members may become indigent due to the sit-at-home order by the Federal Government in Lagos, Ogun and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in view of the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Our members eligible for the welfare packages are those that are active at meetings, whether they have paid their dues or not, and those, who have paid their dues for this financial year from January to date.”

Onojomete listed items to be given to each member to include: a 10kg bag of rice,10kg bag of gaari and one litre of vegetable oil.

The chairman then urged members to strictly adhere to preventive measures by regularly

practicing handwashing with soap for 20 seconds and make use of hand sanitizer.

He also advised them to avoid shaking of hands and practice social distancing as laid down by the government to stay safe.

Onojomete said that register would be opened effective from Monday at the Alumni Centre, No. 3, William Carew St., Anthony Lagos, where eligible members would collect their packages.

The Alumni chairman, however, promised that the association would reach out to other members in kind or cash in the days ahead to alleviate their sufferings. (NAN)
