The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN|) says it has completed a monitoring exercise of public and private schools in six states as steps to flush out unqualified teachers by 2019.

Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, Registrar, TRCN, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

Ajiboye said the exercise was being conducted in schools across the federation to see the level of compliance of teachers in those schools with TRCN’s requirements and mandate.

“The National Council on Education gave another extension that by December 2019, any teacher that is not qualified, registered and licensed by TRCN will be removed from the classroom.

“Towards that, TRCN has commenced activities of monitoring. We have monitored the activities of teachers in six states of the federation; we selected one state from each geopolitical zone.

“Nasarawa  State from North Central; Ogun State from South West; South East we used Ebonyi state, South South, we used Cross Rivers; North West we used Jigawa and North East we used Gombe.

“And we have in our data bank now teachers from both public and private schools in those six states.

“We know those who are qualified and those who are not qualified, those who are registered, and that is the beginning of our activities, so when we begin to move out for enforcement we know where to start from.

“We have not had problem with the private schools, we normally discuss with the leadership of the private schools.

“And that is why we still use this opportunity to advise private school owners to make sure they employ qualified, registered and licensed teachers.’’

Ajiboye further assured Nigerians that the council would soon launch the Teacher Information System, which would give the data of all teachers registered with the council, on its website.

He said the system, which was long overdue, had been delayed because some states submitted the data of their teachers late. (NAN)
