–

SHEHU Garki Ado, vice-chancellor of the university addressing the new students cautioned them to be wary of falling victims to bad vices during their stay at the institution.

Ado gave the advice while addressing newly matriculated 1,320 students at the 11th matriculation ceremony of the institution, which held at the Conference Hall of the Muhammadu Sanusi II ICT Centre of the university.

In a statement signed by Mustapha Abdu Radda, public relations officer of the university, the vice-chancellor highlighted the importance of imbibing the values of decency as students took their matriculation oaths.

Ado noted that the young but fast growing university was collaborating with security agencies in the state to ensure effective security for the students and the whole university.

He advised the students to be law abiding and be good ambassadors of the school at all times and warned that the AUK would not tolerate immoral acts capable of reversing the gains made so far. He cautioned the new students to shun destructive acts such as examination malpractices, drug addiction, fighting, vandalism, sexual harassment and threat to lives.

He reminded the students that acts of gross misconduct attract appropriate punishments, including expulsion.

Ado disclosed that 16 students were recently expelled by the management for their refusal to comply with the relocation directive given last January. He said such measures became necessary as parts of the university’s pre-emptive measures to curtail indecency among its students.

Al-Qalam University, Katsina, formerly Katsina University, is a private institution founded by the Katsina Islamic Foundation to promote high morals and cultivate sound academics in the country.

Debuting with just four academic courses when it gained accreditation in 2010, the AUK has since obtained full accreditation from the National Universities Commission, NUC, to run 22 programmes in Humanities, Engineering and Sciences. It also has approval to run post-graduate programmes in Islamic studies.

Just few ago, the third set of the Board of Trustees of the university was inaugurated with Lawal Kaita, a former governor of the state, leading the board.

During the occasion, Aminu Alhassan Dantata, a business mogul and chancellor of the university, promised his continued assistance to the institution amidst renewed calls for well spirited individuals in the country to extend their hands of fellowship to the school.

In the same vein, Mannir Yakubu, deputy governor of Katsina State, said the state government would not relent in promoting the ideals of the university in furtherance of the historical position of Katsina as the centre of formal and Islamic learning.
