THE Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists operating within Enugu State to fix their vehicles to ensure free flow of traffic during the “ember” months.

The Sector Commander of FRSC in the state, Mr Joseph Toby, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Wednesday.

Toby spoke on his command’s readiness for the ember months’ special operations.
He said that the theme of this year’s ember months special operations is “Avoid speeding, overloading and unsafe tyres to arrive alive”.

He urged motorists to stop being hasty and unnecessarily anxious on the roads in order to check “uncoordinated speeding”.

The state FRSC boss said that the corps was aware that about 90 per cent of road crashes are man-made.
He said that most times, failure by motorists to fix their vehicles before embarking on journeys, usually leads to accidents.

He said: “When we do our part by totally fixing our vehicles, there will be less breakdowns and vehicle dysfunctions on our roads.

“Travellers and drivers should also plan their journeys ahead of time and leave early, notwithstanding the nearness of their destination.

“While on the road, we must drive defensively and accommodate other road users.
“Motorists and passengers should be disciplined on the road.

“They should maintain diligent driving path that ensures clear road lane discipline, while on a flowing traffic or vehicular queues,” Toby said.

He said that the command would ensure 15 per cent reduction in road crashes this season as against the same period in 2021.

He said that the feat could be achieved through its intensive patrol, education and rescue operations on the major road corridors in state.

He, however, said that the organisation would not achieve the target without the support of well-meaning Nigerians and other critical stakeholders.

“We are calling for the active collaboration of sister security agencies, the state ministry of transport, community leaders, transport unions and companies and the media.

“We also appreciate hospitals in the state for their immense cooperation in treating accident victims without asking us for monetary deposits.

“They should keep it up,” he said. (NAN)
