EndSARS: Judicial panel of inquiry commences inaugural sitting in A’Ibom

The Judicial Panel of Investigation on Incidences of Police Brutality in Akwa Ibom, on Monday, held its inaugural sitting with a call on interested parties to submit memoranda to the panel.

The Chairman of the Panel, Retired Justice Ifiok Ukana, in his inaugural address assured people with genuine complaints of justice.

Ukana said that the panel would do a thorough job by addressing the memoranda objectively.

“In the light of the following, this panel has invited memoranda from individuals, corporate bodies, interested development groups to avail themselves of the opportunity presented by setting up this panel,” he said.

He called on people in the state with genuine grievances to approach the investigative panel and lay their complaints.

In his remarks, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Akwa Ibom, Mr Uwemedimo Nwoko, promised that the state government would not interfere in the hearings of the panel..

Nwoko expressed optimism that the work of the panel would bring peace to the state and country.

The attorney-general and commissioner for justice promised the public that the submissions from the panel would be implemented by the government.

The Chairman, Civil Liberties Organisation in the state, Mr. Franklyn Isong commended the state government for setting up the panel.

Isong urged the government to ensure that recommendations from the panel were implemented to ensure a lasting peace.

The Judicial Panel of Investigation on Incidences of Police Brutality in Akwa Ibom has as its terms of reference to receive and investigate complaints of police brutality, human rights violations, and extrajudicial killings.

Similarly, the panel would also evaluate the evidence presented/other surrounding circumstances, and draw conclusions as to the validity of the complaints and recommend compensation and other remedial measures where appropriate.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sitting of the panel was adjourned till Monday, Nov.16.
