Joseph Gbenu, Chairman, Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State, on Wednesday commended youths for displaying a high level of comportment and maturity during the EndSARS protests in the town.
Gbenu gave the commendation at a Consultative Meeting with youths leaders from different groups in the council, market men and women, held at the Council Secretariat in Kankon, Badagry.
According to him, it has become very pertinent for me to appreciate the teeming youths of Badagry West for displaying a high level of comportment, maturity and understanding during the protests.
“I also want to use this opportunity to thank you all for adhering to the directive of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on the curfew imposed on the state in the wake of violence that greeted the protests in some parts of the state.
“You have vacated the highways at Gbaji, Seme, Owode, Badagry Round About and Agbara at the appropriate time.
“Peaceful protest, no doubt, is your right as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, knowing well that we operate a democratic system of government in Nigeria.
“As your council chairman, I’m so delighted to associate myself with you, especially considering the set of sound, dexterous, educated, responsible, proactive, intelligent and brave set of youths I found myself to be serving in this area,” he said.
The chairman, however, expressed
his deepest heart feelings to the families of youths affected during the peaceful protests across the state and nation in general before it was hijacked by thugs and hoodlums.
He appealed to youths to be more vigilant and protect their communities with all sense of intelligence and vigour as it remains their pride.
“On our part, as a government too, we have not, and will not rest on our oars in ensuring adequate security and protection of lives and property.
“I strongly advice our youths to continue to maintain peace and unity at this tempo, while the responsive administration of Gov. Sanwoolu, put your 5for5, 7for7 agendas into action,” Gbenu said.
He advised youths not to harbour or allow hoodlums into the communities to destroy any of the government properties.
The chairman urged the youth leaders to serve as channels of peace, love, and unity to other teeming youths to be careful, while using the social media.
Gbenu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment toward youth capacity development, empowerment and jobs creation.
Responding, Mr Sunday Aladeotan, the Coordinator, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Badagry West chapter, commended the chairman for his consistent support and welfare to youths within and outside the council.
Aladeotan, also known as “Water”, described Gbenu as a mentor and an emblem of unity and a blessing to the present generation.
He said that the consultative meeting was necessary to appreciate youths for their active participation during the protests.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that administrative heads from the Badagry West LCDA attended the meeting. (NAN)
