#ENDSARS Protest: Lagos NUJ condemns assaults on photo journalists

THE Lagos State council of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has condemned in its entirety a reported attack of some rampaging youths on three photojournalists, while going about their legitimate duties in Lagos on Friday, October 23.

According to a statement signed by  Qasim Akinreti, chairman and Alfred Odifa, secretary, it was a wicked and barbaric attack, which must be condemned by all well-meaning Nigerians and other members of the society.

The three journalists attacked by the hoodlums include a member of the NUJ executive in Lagos State Council,  Isaac Ayodele of THE NATION Newspapers as well as one  Abiodun Willams and Mike Otogu.

Apart from severe bodily injuries suffered by the three  photo journalists, their expensive professional cameras were also terribly damaged by the hoodlums.

The therefore, calls for a decisive action by government, to stop all forms of attack on newsmen and ensure necessary protection for them in the course of discharging their constitutional responsibilities to the society.

In the meantime, there is a need for a thorough investigation of the unprovoked assault to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.

The Union is, however, using this opportunity to appeal to Governor Babajide  Sanwo-olu and Lagos State government to assist the victims with immediate replacement of the damaged cameras, which are essential tools of their job as photo journalists.
