Engineer in court over alleged theft of goods worth N386,000

THE police on Wednesday in Abuja arraigned a 33-year-old engineer, Peter Ochai, in a Dutse Grade I Area Court for allegedly stealing goods worth N386, 000.

Ochai, who resides in Bwari, FCT, is charged with housebreaking and theft. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecution Counsel, Mrs Idowu Ojo, told the court that the matter was reported by the complainant, Peter Chindo on May 16, at the Bwari Police Station.

Ojo alleged that on Feb. 13, the defendant broke into the house of Mr Benedict Kohe, a brother to the complainant and stole a 51-inche LG television set, a gas cylinder and N5,000 cash.

She told the court the defendant and complainant live at the same address.

Ojo said that the defendant allegedly returned and broke into the same house on May 11 and also stole one big ‘Sumec’ generator set, a micro wave and a double gas burner.

The prosecution said that the defendant also stole nine pairs of shoes, four sets of suits, clothes, a DSTV decorder set, a stabiliser, some breakable plates, a touch-light and a 25 litres of palm oil.

The prosecution alleged that the defendant also stole a carton of fish, wrappers and a wheel barrow.

Ojo said that during police investigation, few of the items were found in possession of the defendant. She also added that the defendant refused to disclose the whereabouts of the remaining items.

The prosecution said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 347 and 287 of the Penal Code.

The Presiding Officer, Mr Suleiman Mohammed, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with a surety in like sum. He adjourned the case until June 18 for hearing. (NAN)
